"Maa’ala Lichen" Cotton Clutch Bag
byMama Tierra
Celebrate spring with this colourful clutch by Mama Tierra. The clutch is made in Venezuela using organic cotton yarn with cotton lining and Italian zipper. Wear it as a shoulder bag by attaching a strap.
The Maa’ala snake refers to the totemic animal of the Uraliyu clan and is based on one of its myths. Following the Wayuu oral tradition, Maa’ala was a young woman, who refused to marry. So, she was bewitched by the man who was in love with her. Condemned to be transformed into a snake, Maa’ala preferred to live as a snake and wander through the Caribbean desert, instead of bearing children in the Wayuu polygynist society.
Mama Tierra supports indigenous women in Venezuela, who crafttheir products with great dedication. The brand uses GOTS-certified cotton yarn for all clutches and pouches. Since most indigenous textiles are made from plastic-based yarns, the production of the Mama Tierra accessories avoids using fossil-fuel by-products contributing to a reduction in plastic waste in indigenous land.
